Wisepill established
From one idea to a complete adherence platform
Wisepill Technologies was founded in 2007 by Lloyd and Ricci Marshall in Somerset West, South Africa. The company began with a clear challenge: medication non-adherence is difficult to manage when care teams and researchers only learn about missed treatment long after it happens.
Wisepill developed an internet-connected pillbox that could record an opening and securely transmit the event, giving programmes timely, objective adherence information. That early concept grew into a family of Smart Pillboxes, the Wisepill adherence platform and integration APIs used in research, clinical trials and treatment programmes.
Milestones
- 2007 — Wisepill established. Development began on a practical connected pillbox for real-time medication adherence monitoring.
- 2010 — International clinical research. Family Health International selected Wisepill for Truvada clinical trials involving pre-exposure prophylaxis.
- 2011 — Technology recognition. Wisepill received a South African Department of Trade and Industry Technology Award for small businesses.
- Today — A complete adherence solution. Wisepill provides Smart Pillboxes, cloud software, reports, interventions, APIs and implementation support.
